Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend that women visit a gynaecologist annually for a check-up, and more frequently if they experience symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, pelvic pain, or other reproductive concerns.
In the UK, the NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women aged 50 to 70 to undergo mammograms every three years, extending up to 73 years upon request. Women under 50 are generally not included in routine screening unless they are at high risk because breast density in younger women can make mammograms less effective at detecting cancer. Make your health provider aware of any relevant family history and regardless of age seek a medical evaluation promptly for any physical changes or specific concerns.
Heavy menstrual periods, also known as menorrhagia, are common but they are not necessarily "normal." It is important to differentiate between what may be heavier than usual for one individual versus what is clinically considered excessive bleeding. Typically, a period is considered heavy if it:
  • Lasts longer than 7 days
  • Requires changing sanitary products more often than every 1-2 hours
  • Involves passing large blood clots larger than a quarter
  • Leads to symptoms of anaemia, such as tiredness, fatigue, or shortness of breath
Heavy menstrual bleeding can be caused by a variety of factors including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, or other underlying health conditions. Women experiencing these issues with their periods are advised to seek a consultation to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
