Birth Control: Frequently Asked Questions About Contraceptives

Do I need a contraceptive if I am breastfeeding?

Yes, If the goal is to ensure not becoming pregnant. Women who are breastfeeding should not rely on the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) as their sole means of avoiding pregnancy. Only under the following three conditions is LAM considered to be effective.
    1. The baby is under six months old.
    2. The mother is exclusively breastfeeding, meaning the baby receives no supplemental formula or solids, and breastfeeding occurs at regular intervals day and night.
    3. The mother has not resumed her period (amenorrhea).
If any of these conditions change—such as introducing formula, solids, or a significant reduction in breastfeeding frequency—ovulation can resume, and fertility returns.

Why is the rhythm method of birth control an unreliable means of contraception?

The rhythm or calendar method relies on keeping track of a woman’s menstrual cycle in order to avoid unprotected sex during the time just prior to, during, and also post ovulation or until the next menstrual cycle begins. Many women do not have perfectly regular 28-day cycles. Even slight irregularities in the cycle length or ovulation timing can make predictions inaccurate. Factors such as stress, illness, changes in weight, or travel can disrupt regular cycles, making it difficult to predict the fertile window.
